Question your Quest - A Guide to Rethinking Your Map to Life Purpose

A few years ago I read a book called The Happiness of Pursuit by Chris Guillebeau. The book shares his quest to see every country within a 10-year span. At that time, I myself was committed to taking my kids to see all the continents before they turned 18, so I was intrigued. I realized that I was on a quest and didn’t even know it! After reflecting on the book, talking to folks and working with them, I realized many people have at least one quest and don’t even realize it.

Questing, when utilized for what it is meant for, a hero’s journey, can be a catapult and launch you into your highest self and living your purpose. And if you are living your purpose, it can be a catalyst for the next level of that purpose. Once I reframed my own quest in this way, it took on a life of its own and shifted how I am being with life.

Yet, when I wasn’t aware of it as a quest, it easily was pushed to the side and derailed, creating blocks and sluggishness in life. I’m sure you can relate.

We’re diving into your quest today and launching you on your journey so you too can experience feeling like a hero/heroine in your own life!

What Is A Quest?

Different from “a goal”, a quest inspires you --  and it’s not about checking off the boxes. It’s deeper, it’s from a place of being-ness. A quest is about self-discovery through taking on a challenge and should require a sacrifice of some kind.  It is often driven by a calling or a sense of mission.

One of the quests I read about was of a family with two young sons who took an extended trip and rode bicycles a couple of thousand miles down the west coast of Canada into Argentina. At the time, they had to take the kids out of school, and take sabbaticals from work and their children were adolescents (around 10-12).   It was no easy feat to motivate them. I remember reading that on the big mountains, every few miles, the mom would pop an M&M into the boy’s mouths to keep them going.

The result of this quest was incredible.  I imagine they were so much more than the family could have planned by completing some kind of goal for the year. Beyond stories to tell, their family unit was incredible, and their individual sense of pride, accomplishment and threshold to take on big challenges in the lives of these young men must be very high indeed!

Why Is It Important to Have A Quest?

Everyone needs adventure in some way! Your quest is important because it stretches you in a reframed way - not unlike a quest in a mythical book, fable, or movie.

In my own questing, I have connected to a part of myself I didn’t know existed - one of imagination, awe, wonder and inspiration.  What has come out of this is a deeper level of joy and satisfaction with my life.

I have also learned so much about others’ quests and how they are a hero in their own story. This allows me to connect, champion and be with them in a way I could not have otherwise. I have a tribe of questers who have claimed their inner hero/heroine and they are in it for the fun and the adventure.

Questing & Curiosity

Discovering your quest is closely related to curiosity, as both involve a sense of openness, wonder, and exploration. When you are curious, you are naturally drawn toward exploring new ideas, experiences, and perspectives. Similarly, when you are on a quest, you are seeking to discover a deeper sense of purpose and meaning in your life. This requires an openness to exploring new paths, taking risks, and embracing uncertainty. By cultivating curiosity and a willingness to explore the unknown, you can uncover new insights and perspectives that can guide you toward your true quest. So embrace your curiosity, and allow it to guide you on your journey toward discovering your purpose and path.

Your Challenge

  1. Think of what you are already doing or have wanted to do but lacked the motivation, energy, or will to start.  It could be that you are reading books and want to read 12 new books this year. This is a simple way to start approaching your questing. Elaborate on this and expand. (Perhaps you meet one of the authors)

  2. Don’t overthink this. Just start approaching that thing as if you are a traveler, a hero, an adventurer. Take small steps toward it and they add up to bigger steps.

  3. As you move through your journey, just like characters in a book or movie, you slow down everything and you experience it

  4. Then, you debrief it. How is this inherently changing you? (Remember, this is different from goals, where you achieve and check them off)

  5. Sit with this. Share your debrief in your journal, with a friend or your coach. Ask them about their quests and encourage others to hone in on and take steps in their own quest.

Remember that your quest can be fun, exciting and filled with joy at times. Your quest also, can and should have challenges. This isn’t a sign that you should stop, it is a sign you are on the right journey, your quest, just remember to keep going!
